Summer, 2005 – Schmidt Confused About Patriot Act, Gays in the Military, Iraq

On a questionnaire for a local Republican club, Schmidt answers “Yes” and “No” on question about gays in the military, writes that she is “unsure” about the Patriot Act and says the U.S. military should not be used to “spread democracy around the world.” This one is worth a read!

Nov. 18, 2005 – Schmidt Attacks John Murtha, Violates Congressional Rules

Ignoring a ban on personally insulting Members of Congress on the House floor, Schmidt calls decorated war hero and former Marine Congressman John Murtha  “coward.”

April, 2006 -  Schmidt Claims College Degree She Never Received

Says she earned a Bachelor’s degree in “social studies-secondary education” that she never did.

April, 2006 – Schmidt Claims Endorsements She Didn’t Have

Representative Tom Tancredo and the Family Research Council did not endorse her.

April, 2006 – Schmidt Flip-flops on Pro-Life Stance, Endorses Death Penalty

In a letter to the Fraternal Order of Police, Jean Schmidt says she supports the death penalty, despite having previously opposed it.

April 28, 2006 – Schmidt Cited for “Reckless Disregard for the Truth” by Unanimous Ohio Elections Commission

August 25, 2006 – Schmidt Caught Plagiarizing Guest Column

Having trouble coming up with her own ideas, Schmidt submits a guest column that is largely identical to one published by Deborah Pryce.

March 21, 2007 – Schmidt calls neglect at Army's Walter Reed hospital "overblown."

Washington Post finds significant neglect and sub-standard living conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Schmidt says the situation is "overblown by both politicians and the media."

The Enquirer responds by writing, "Those simplistic approaches do a disservice to the veterans who need our help and who should be the only focus of non-partisan action to improve the situation."

Sept. 4, 2007 – Schmidt Again Caught Plagiarizing Guest Column

For the second time in a year, Jean Schmidt submitted someone else’s writing and claimed it was her own. Compare her column to that of the State Highway Patrolman who she plagiarized from.

June - August, 2008 – Schmidt Refuses to Back Down From China-Cuba Drilling Myth

June 5, 2008 - Jean Schmidt Lies  on the House Floor

“This very day, there is indeed the drilling activity off of our country’s coast. Not by our U.S. companies; that would be illegal. Instead, the Chinese are drilling off the coast of Florida, with their new energy partner, Cuba." Watch it here.

June 17, 2008 – Schmidt’s Lie Reported in Cincinnati Enquirer

Vice President Dick Cheney, who made a similar claim, has issued a statement acknowledging that the Chinese are not drilling in that area, and Florida GOP Sen. Mel Martinez called the rumor "simply false."

"They are akin to urban legends," Martinez said on the Senate floor

June 17, 2008 – Schmidt blames John Boehner for her lie

Meanwhile, Schmidt's office has pointed out - correctly - that Schmidt was not the only southern Ohio lawmaker to mistakenly state that the Chinese are drilling off Florida.

June 17, 2008 – Hamilton County Dem Chair Tim Burke asks Schmidt to retract her lie

In light of the article in this morning's Enquirer, on behalf of all the of the residents of the 2nd Congressional District, I request that you immediately retract the statements you made on the floor of the United States House of Representatives on June 5th that “the Chinese are drilling off the coast of Florida.”

June 17, 2008 – Chris Redfern, Ohio Democratic Party asks Schmidt to retract her lie

"Jean Schmidt owes her district and the state of Ohio an apology for yet another embarrassing performance in Congress," Redfern said in a press release. " I hope Jean Schmidt will publicly retract her false statements and place remarks in the official Congressional Record clarifying that the urban legend she told was untrue. Whether she's insulting a decorated war hero like John Murtha or telling lies for political advantage, Jean Schmidt has consistently misrepresented the hard-working, honest people of Ohio."   

June 18, 2008 –In letter to Burke, Jean Schmidt blames Democrats for her lie

“While I have yet to receive a copy of your letter attacking me, I wanted to respond as soon as possible. I always enjoy your loose relationship with the truth, but this one may well earn you a gold medal for hypocrisy. ... Further, I find it amazing that the Communists in Cuba have demonstrated a better understanding of the laws of supply and demand than your party. “

June 20, 2008 - Tim Burke responds to Schmidt’s vitriolic letter

“While I have no reason to believe that you made a deliberate attempt to deceive, you made a statement on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives that was not true, a mistake that should be acknowledged and corrected. That was all I asked. So I was surprised by your vitriolic, wild reply…I guess Saturday Night Live got it right.”

June 20, 2008 – Schmidt blames the media for her lie

"Just like most Americans, the Congresswoman gets a lot of her information from the media," Pfaff said. "People are behaving as if she pulled this out of thin air. We're learning our lesson though. I guess the next time we'll have to call the Cuban government to see if they are drilling."

June 20, 2008 – Schmidt blames “others” for her lie

“On June 5, I stated that the Chinese were drilling for oil in conjunction with the Cuban government. I was not the only one to have made that statement.”

July 10, 2008 – Schmidt Uses Taxpayer-funded Congressional Staff to Run Her Campaign

“It appears from comments in several news stories that Congresswoman Schmidt’s Chief of Staff is repeatedly speaking on behalf of Congresswoman Schmidt’s Campaign for Re-Election. 2 years ago: John McCain said, "if Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole."

7 months ago: Federal Reserve bails out investment bank Bear Stearns.

3 months ago: IndyMac bank is seized by federal regulators.

A few weeks ago: Jean Schmidt learns of financial crisis.

Oct 29, 2008 – Desperate Schmidt breaks her own pledge after just one week; launches baseless character attack.

On October 22, Schmidt said, "This time, I've decided my campaign commercials on TV are going to be positive and they're going to focus on the issues affecting our nation, our economy, and our children."

On October 29, Schmidt launches most baseless ad yet, falsely maligning Wulsin's medical career. These false allegations were "thoroughly reviewed" by the State Medical Board of Ohio, a non-partisan panel of experts, who determined that the allegations have no merit and required no further action. The Cincinnati Enquirer described Schmidt's charges as "stretching the truth."
